(QNO)- A farmer in Quang Nam earns billions of Vietnamese dongs by growing a wild species of plant, Tiliacora triandra. He is Nguyen Quang Dinh.
Nguyen Quang Dinh is known as the ‘King’ of growing Tiliacora triandra, providing stable jobs for several people.
Tiliacora triandra is a slender, evergreen, climbing shrub. Its leaves are commonly used to make jelly which is enjoyed as a beverage.
Nguyen Quang Dinh started his Tiliacora triandra farm in 2013. This species of plant grows well and adapts to local hot and dry weather. So, after a short time, it can be harvested, and the yield has become better and better.
According to Dinh, it is easy to plant Tiliacora triandra. This species of plant needs enough water to grow well. After 5-6 months, he can harvest its leaves.
As Tiliacora triandra is a liana, Dinh designs a climbing trellis to save space and plants more trees. At the same time, the trellis facilitates his harvest and protects the vines from falling.
Dinh is now owning a 3000 sqm Tiliacora triandra farm. On average, he collects around 200-300 kilos of leaves from every 500 sqm each day.
Tiliacora triandra leaves are sold at a price of VND 100,000-150,000 a kilo. In the hot season, there are not enough leaves to provide for the market.
So, he is planning to expand it to provide more Tiliacora triandra leaves for the market.
According to traditional medicine, Tiliacora triandra leaves contain a lot of vitamin A, beta-carotene, phosphorus, polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and minerals such as calcium and iron that are good for health.
They can be used to purify and detoxify the body, cool the liver, and treat constipation and urinary incontinence. In particular, Tiliacora triandra leaves contain lots of anti-ageing and anti-cancer substances.
