Cooperation for East - West Economic Corridor development

(QNO) - On April 2nd, a high-level meeting on trade, investment, tourism, integration and connectivity promotion among Sekong, Champasak, Ubon Ratchathani, Quang Nam and Da Nang took place in Sekong province (Laos).

The meeting was attended by Secretary of the Quang Nam provincial Party Committee Luong Nguyen Minh Triet, Sekong province’s Party Committee Secretary and Governor Lekalay Sivilay, Deputy Governor of Champasak province Somboun Hueangvongsa (Laos), Deputy Governor of Ubon Ratchathani Songlak Worapai (Thailand), Chairman of the People Committee of Da Nang city Le Trung Chinh and others.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Secretary and Governor of Sekong province Lekalay Sivilay said Sekong is at the center of the integration and connection between Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. In particular, the distance from Da Nang deep-water port to the Nam Giang - Dak Ta Ooc international border gate is 260km long.

In recent years, Sekong has invested in infrastructure, gradually attracting investment in the fields of trade and tourism.

Now, the province aims to become a place of electricity production, clean agricultural production associated with the processing industry in Southern Laos.

Giving a speech at the meeting, Secretary Triet stated that Quang Nam has friendly and cooperative relations with 4 southern provinces of Laos, including the twinning relationship and comprehensive cooperation with Sekong since 1984, a cooperative agreement on trade, investment, tourism, culture and education with Champasak since 2007.

In addition, Quang Nam has signed a cooperative agreement on agriculture, trade, investment, tourism, and logistics with Ubon Ratchathani province (Thailand) since 2013.

According to Secretary Triet, the meeting plays an important role for localities in the East - West Economic Corridor (EWEC), especially for Quang Nam province.

It is an opportunity to promote investment, trade, tourism, and service between the parties, making an important contribution to the early formation of the EWEC to connect with the Central key economic region of Vietnam through Nam Giang international border gate, especially in the fields of forestry, tourism, traffic and transportation.

Also at the meeting, Chairman of Da Nang People's Committee Le Trung Chinh said, since 2016, Da Nang has proposed to mobilize ODA (Official Development Assistance) loans to develop the EWEC from Da Nang through Nam Giang border gate, Dak Chung district (Sekong), Pakse town (Champasak ) and Ubon Ratchathani.

It will create great opportunities for localities in the EWEC to shorten transit distances for goods exported to countries in the region and around the world.

Over the past time, exploiting the potential and advantages of each locality in the EWEC has become increasingly effective, contributing to socio-economic development for each locality, connecting world cultural heritages, and creating favorable access to local resources, land, and human resources.

It also facilitates trade, the transport of passengers and goods across borders of countries located in the EWEC, trade abroad, and the development of transnational tourism.
